Kids’ Lab

Our Kids’ Lab is open every day!

*** Many children visit our Kids’ Lab in July. Our staff wishes that smaller children take part in the activities together with an adult, in case assistance with going to the toilet or fetching an extra sweater is needed. Thank you for your cooperation. ***

In the Kids’ Lab at Archipelago Centre Korpoström kids and curious adults get to be marine biologist for a couple of hours. By using a microscope and taking water samples the kids will learn about different animals and plants from the Baltic Sea. Children will under supervision study the marine life by using the same equipment as in a real laboratory. Like the rest of the activities in the Skärgårdscentrum Korpoström the Kids’ lab combines art and science.

The concept the northern pike and his gang is Pargas City’s kindergarten education and Skärgårdshavets biosfärområde’s investment to kindle curiosity about nature and environmental questions among the young children.

The expedition of the Archipelago Sea

The expedition of the Archipelago Sea is a collaboration between FÖSS and biosfärområdet. The result of the collaboration is the northern pike and his gang’s island expedition adventure. The expedition offers activities that families can do on their own. The activities is located in fifteen guest harbours in Turku’s archipelago. While going on the expedition you can learn about the archipelago’s nature and culture, do fun activities and collect stamps in the kid’s researcher passport. On each island that belongs to the expedition, there is a signboard with information and challenges for kids and other interested people. The Kids’ lab hands out researcher passport.

Daily activity programme

9.30-10:00 Plastic garbage project – Family guided tour

During the guided tour we will learn about the background to the problem with plastics in the oceans and its serious effects on the seas, animals and humans. We will see the most frequently used everyday objects made of plastic and talk about the consumption of plastic, health effects, microplastics and bioplastics. We will also talk about solutions to the plastic problem. The focus is on decreasing and reusing plastic. To encourage action we will also watch videos of important global and local actors in the fight against marine waste.

10:00-11:00 Water analysis

During the water analysis we will explore the seawater’s properties with real laboratory equipment. We will take samples and measure the temperature of the water on the surface, the water’s turbidity, the oxygen level and the acidity level (pH). We also report the algae situation to Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment via the website http://www.jarviwiki.fi/wiki/Korppoon_-_Houtskarin_ulkosaaristoalue/Valtakunnallisen_lev%C3%A4seurannan_havaintopaikka_(Korpostr%C3%B6m) . On the järvimeriwiki website you can also report the algea situation as a private citizen in the same way either at home or while travelling.

11:00-12:00 Lab on the beach

We explore the sea life near the beach with water binoculars and loupes. We catch, analyse and learn about algae, small water animals and shells. Through play and by doing different activities we will learn about who is living by the shore. We take care of the Kids’ Lab’s aquariums and exchange the animals living in the aquarium for new ones. We also look at the small animals through microscopes.

13:00-14:00 Adventure path

There has been a robbery! Vi need your help to solve a problem by completing some trash challenges. To succeed in this task you need to be clever and be able to cooporate with others! We don’t do the Adventure Path on Fridays, but have a varied offer of special programs set for the same time. See the dates, themes and descriptions below.

14:00-15:00 The Kids’ Lab explores the Plastic Garbage Project Exhibition

We will explore the plastics in the exhibition from different perspectives by looking at the material that we find. We will learn what people used before we had the plastic material. We will also do some activities where we learn about different plastic materials. During these activities we also learn how to sort plastic garbage in order to be awarded a “plastic waste sorting”-certificate. We will also look closely at plastics through a mikroscope.

15:00-16:30 Lab on the dock

We explore the sea life near the dock with water binoculars and loupes. We catch, analyse and learn about algae, small water animals and sea shells. Through play and by doing different activities we will learn about who is living by the dock. We discuss what different ecosystems and food webs can be found in and by the sea. We take care of the Kids’ Lab’s aquariums and put animals that live in the aquarium back in the sea and put new ones there. We also look at the small animals through microscopes.

Friday programme

Every Friday at 1-2 pm. there is a special program with different themes instead of the adventure path. All the activities are for free for children.

14.6 We build wastewater treatment plants

We build our own wastewater treatment plant and try to purify dirty water as much as possible by filtering it through different sand and clay layers and other filtering materials. We look in the microscope at bacteria from the wastewater treatment plant of the Archipelago Centre. We see how the bacteria eat nutrients from the sludge. We also discuss what we can do to reduce the amount of nutrients that flow into the sea.

21.6 We make underwater videos

We film and make underwater videos with a waterproof camera. We also build our own aquariums on land and film the small animals living in them.

28.6 Beeswax food wraps & insect hotels

Together with the Handicraft arts & craft studio in the Archipelago Centre we make beeswax food wraps (we have all the materials needed). We also build insect hotels from common reed and discuss the insects’ role in the ecosystem.

5.7 The marinebiologists presents their work & lab

We get to visit Åbo Akademy University’s marine biologists’ laboratory in Korpoström. A marine biologist will tell us what experiments they have ongoing and will show us their laboratory equipment. We also get to learn how a real diving suit is used and try to walk in the water wearing waders.

12.7 We make underwater videos

We film and make underwater videos with a waterproof camera. We also build our own aquariums on land and film the small animals living in them.

19.7 The marinebiologists presents their work & lab

We get to visit Åbo Akademy University’s marine biologists’ laboratory in Korpoström. A marine biologist will tell us what experiments they have ongoing and will show us their laboratory equipment. We also get to learn how a real diving suit is used and try to walk in the water wearing waders.

26.7 The Archipelago National Park

Metsähallitus tells us about the Archipelago National Park and about how they take care of the different natural environments in the park. They also tell us about what they have seen during their diving expeditions in the Archipelago sea.

2.8 We build wastewater treatment plants

We build our own wastewater treatment plant and try to purify dirty water as much as possible by filtering it through different sand and clay layers and other filtering materials. We look in the microscope at bacteria from the wastewater treatment plant of the Archipelago Centre. We see how the bacteria eat nutrients from the sludge. We also discuss what we can do to reduce the amount of nutrients that flow into the sea.

9.8 Claysculptures & life on the seabottom

We make clay sculptures and talk about what animals live on different seabeds and what animals like living in mud.

About the organisation

The Kids’ Lab activities are organised by the Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve in tight cooperation with marine biologists at the Åbo Akademi University and the Archipelago Centre Korpoström.
