Wednesday 29 July, at 6 pm the Archipelago Centre offers a unique opportunity to watch the internationally acclaimed short film Wild Summon (2023) and meet its directors, Karni Arieli and Saul Freed, for a discussion about the film.
The filmmaking duo, who found their way to Korpo through the AARK artist residency, hope their film will inspire new ways of telling environmental stories and engage audiences with the natural world in fresh and compelling ways.
Wild Summon (UK, 2023, 14 min) is an award-winning eco-fantasy animated short directed by Karni Arieli and Saul Freed. Narrated by Marianne Faithfull, the film follows the extraordinary life cycle of a female salmon, portrayed as a free diver in human form. From a tiny stream to the open ocean and back again, her perilous journey becomes a powerful story of survival, resilience and renewal. The short film breaks boundaries of genre and form of cinematography by combining nature documentary with animation, live-action underwater photography and antrhropomorphising of the salmon. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, Wild Summon has since received international acclaim and won Best Short Film at the Raindance Film Festival.
