The dance performance When the End Drew Near, a Young Jester Was Summoned to the Court explores the historical figure of the jester, his role and profession, and his small yet public world. The work enters into a dialogue with the painting Stańczyk During a Ball at the Court of Queen Bona in the Face of the Loss of Smolensk (1862) by the Polish artist Jan Matejko (1838–1893). The performance reflects on questions of the public and the private, individual agency and freedom of action, as well as the vulnerability, power, and possibly narcissistic relationship between the performing artist and the audience.
The movement material is rooted in the traditions of Western contemporary and artistic dance, which Nadja Leham has studied in Helsinki, Outokumpu and Copenhagen. Her background in club and street dance also informs her artistic expression.
